    Take your pick…

Here are two photos that I happen to like a great deal, they’re both of Brian Whalen aka Ginger.  I used to see Brian at the Brea skatepark a lot and always knew that he killed it, then I saw footage of the guy and was blown away.  For such a big guy to have so much control over his board is beyond me.  He’s been around lately and has definitely been killing it.  On this particular day we decided to have a bbq and had been drinking for a good amount of time before skating.  So I was not quite all there and let me tell you, trying to light and shoot a photo with blurry vision is quite the task.  I don’t know how Aaron does it, haha just kidding Mr. Brown.  Anyway I ended up getting two photos that I was pretty stoked on.  Here’s the first:

    Brian Whalen: Nosegrind pop out

I like this photo for so many reasons, the first being that the shirt Brian is wearing just blasts out at you.  I also love everything about the tree, it’s lit in a way that you notice it but it doesn’t take away from the trick and the slender shape to it seems to fit the photo.  Everything in the photo seems to frame Brian from the foreground branches and the tree to my favorite final touch of the pic, the tiny moon in the corner.  To me it’s just a very smooth and mellow photo.  Here we have photo number 2:

    Brian Whalen: 50-50 pop over

This photo is much more rugged to me.  There’s a lot more going on in this pic with the bush in the foreground and the tree spreading across the frame.  Usually I’d say it’s too much but here I love it because I think instead of distracting it adds to the rawness of the trick.  You can just see the speed of the trick by Brian’s body, and with the trees going everywhere it works with him flying by.  This angle also gives you two more things that the previous didn’t; the complete view of the hills behind him, and you also notice how long the rail actually is.  Good job Ginger.

Now between the two photos I think I just might like the nosegrind a bit more, but then I look at the 50-50 and I must admit I do like it quite a bit.  The 50-50 is obviously a way gnarlier trick, I mean come on grinding up that damn thing and popping over the cap is no joke; not to mention its on a sketchy, shaky round bar that would barely stay in place.  Okay okay overall yes the nosegrind is the one for me.  Now I’m not looking for props or to boost my ego here or anything, but I was just curious to see what people were feeling between the two.  So go ahead and cast your votes now and let me know America.  The first 10 voters will win a date with Muckles, he’s a hot commodity right now from what I hear.

    haha

definitely the first one works for me. its closer, tighter, and more composed. maybe the pop-over would have looked better taken straight on? i dunno.

    Awesome show! Great job!

Nosegrind for sure, the moon is the best. I still wanna see a photo on that spot from behind the rail so you can see the whole OC skyline in the background… get on it Sparkles!
